"Through consuming pop music, people express who they are, which group they belong to and what their identity is. However, contrary to what many believe, people’s identity is not strictly individual. Instead, it is highly social and draws on socio-cultural values — what I propose to call 'VALUES' — that become 'objectified' or institutionalised and can therefore be communicated to others. If such institutionalised socio-cultural values are not conceptualised, and if one is unable to understand how institutions signal people’s identity, one cannot explain the advent of pop music.”
